person accessing a fake website

As the holidays approach, it’s important to be aware

Common holiday fraud schemes include fake websites, where scammers create sites that look like real retailers, tricking shoppers into buying non-existent items. Phishing scams are also prevalent, with emails or texts that seem to come from trusted companies asking for personal information or prompting clicks on malicious links. Gift card scams can also pose a serious threat, as scammers often request payment via gift cards, which are tough to trace.

Tips to stay safe

First, shop smart by sticking to trusted websites and checking for secure URLs (HTTPS). Be cautious of unsolicited communications and verify the authenticity of any unexpected messages asking for personal information by contacting companies directly using verified numbers. Regularly monitor your bank and credit card statements for any unauthorized transactions.
